True to its name, the Vanilla cupcake at Butter Lane (East Village) is intensely buttery. Fun fact: They teach cupcake making classes here!
Vanilla. True, pure, intense vanilla flavor that lingers long after you take a bite. The pastry chef of NoLita based Little Cupcake Bakeshop, Sal, told me they import the best vanilla from Madagascar. The flavor comes through. If a wallop of vanilla flavor is what you’re after, they deliver best out of everyone on this list.
Tu-Lu’s cupcake is moist, flavorful, and not too sweet - this well balanced cake was my favorite of the day. This East Village spot serves up cute mini cupcakes, as well!
Buttery, moist cake that has the distinct taste of batter. Intense, sweet icing. It was a little too much. I think this would have been the absolute best cupcake if it had about half as much icing. Now you know what to order. ;D
If you’d like a little buzz to go along with your cupcake, the West Villiage’s Sweet Revenge is your place. The “Pure” is a mexican vanilla cake with mexican vanilla frosting sprinkled with crystal sugar. The pairing is Italian Principato Pinot Noir. They go great together.
Brooklyn Bonus! Red Hook’s Baked has an excellently balanced vanilla cupcake. Good all around. The texture is reminiscent of spoungecake, which was quite the departure from the other crumbly cupcakes sampled for this list.
